What a Water Heater Replacement Costs in the Valley
A standard tank water heater replacement generally runs between $1,500 and $2,000 installed. That covers the unit, the labor, the connections and hauling the old one away. The reason it is a range rather than a single number is that no two installations are identical — a heater in an accessible garage is a different job from one wedged into a closet that has to be partly dismantled to get the old tank out. We would rather give you an honest range and then a firm price once we have seen the space than quote you a headline number we cannot stand behind.
When You Actually Need a New Water Heater
Tank water heaters generally last eight to twelve years. The signs that yours is near the end are usually clear enough: rusty water from the hot side, water pooling at the base, rumbling from sediment that has built up in the bottom of the tank, or hot water that runs out much faster than it used to. If your heater is showing several of those at once, replacing it is usually the right call. If it is three years old and one thing is wrong with it, it almost certainly is not. We will tell you which situation you are in.
The Hard Water Problem
Water in this valley is hard, and hard water is what kills water heaters here faster than almost anywhere else. Minerals settle out and form a layer of scale in the bottom of the tank, the burner has to work through that layer to heat the water, and the tank overheats and fails early. It is worth understanding this before you replace a unit, because putting a brand new heater on the same untreated water supply gets you the same result in another eight years. If that is your situation, ask us about water conditioning at the same time.

How long should a water heater last in Arizona?
Eight to twelve years is typical, but hard water shortens that. Scale builds up in the bottom of the tank, the burner works harder to heat through it, and the tank fails sooner. Flushing the tank periodically helps. Treating the water helps more.
My water heater is only a few years old and something is wrong. Do I need a new one?
Probably not. A young heater with a single fault is usually worth repairing, and that is what we will recommend. If it can be fixed, we will fix it.
