The Common Faults
A disposal that hums but does not turn is normally jammed rather than dead, and that is often a straightforward fix. One that does nothing at all may just need its reset, or the electrical supply checked. Leaks are usually at the sink flange or the drain connections rather than the unit itself. Genuine motor failure happens, but it is worth ruling the easy things out first — and we will do that before quoting you a new unit.
Replacement
When a unit does need replacing it is a straightforward job: the old one comes out, the new one goes in, and the drain and electrical connections get checked while everything is apart. If the drain line under the sink has been patched together over the years, that is a good moment to sort it out properly.
