Why We Will Not Quote Tankless Over the Phone

We publish a price range for conventional water heaters because that job is predictable. Tankless is not, and we would rather explain why than give you a number that changes when we arrive. A tankless unit fires at a much higher rate than a tank heater, which often means the existing gas line is undersized and has to be replaced. Venting requirements are different too, and depending on where the old tank sat, running proper venting can be straightforward or genuinely difficult. Quoting $3,000 over the phone and then discovering you need a new gas line run across the house does nobody any good. We look at it, then we price it.

Is Tankless Right for Your Home?

Tankless makes the most sense when you are running out of hot water regularly, when you want the floor space back, or when you are already opening up walls for a remodel and the gas and venting work can happen alongside everything else. It makes less sense as a like-for-like swap in a home where the tank heater is doing the job fine and the conversion costs would take decades to earn back. We will tell you honestly which of those describes your house.

What the Conversion Actually Involves

The unit gets mounted on a wall, usually where the old tank sat or somewhere nearby. Gas supply is checked and upgraded if the existing line cannot deliver enough volume. New venting is run — tankless units vent differently from tank heaters and cannot simply reuse the old flue in most cases. Water lines are rerouted to the new unit, and the system is commissioned and tested. On a straightforward job this is a day's work. On a difficult one it is longer, and we will tell you which it is before we start.
